Málaga and Rome to Share the New Headquarters of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry

Málaga and Rome will share the new global headquarters of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the organization that oversees and manages the advancement of chemistry worldwide, with more than 2,000 members from 57 different countries.

The IUPAC Secretariat, the Union’s administrative and technical center, is relocating after almost 30 years based at Research Triangle Park in North Carolina (USA). The move follows a selection process that began in June 2024, which attracted proposals from a dozen countries across Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

Finally, on July 16, the IUPAC General Assembly decided that the Union’s global headquarters would be shared between Málaga and Rome, specifically at the University of Málaga (UMA) and Italy’s National Research Council (CNR), respectively.

In the case of Málaga, its significant role as a technology hub in Spain was highlighted, with “a well-developed ecosystem of academic, industrial, and government collaborations, offering a unique opportunity for the Union to connect with chemists across the Spanish-speaking world.”
