Juan Casado among the 77 University of Málaga researchers recognised as scientists with the highest international impact
Juan Casado is among the UMA researchers included in the 2025 edition of the international database of high-impact scientists based on Scopus bibliometric indicators. In this edition, 77 researchers affiliated with the University of Málaga are included among scientists recognised for their international scientific impact.
The classification forms part of the annual update of “Updated science-wide author databases of standardized citation indicators”, led by Stanford University researcher John P. A. Ioannidis and published by Elsevier. The 2025 edition, released on 19 September, assesses scientific impact using citation data accumulated up to the end of 2024.

Rather than relying exclusively on the total number of citations, the database combines several indicators, including the h-index, the co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, citations according to the researcher’s position among the authors of each publication, and a composite indicator known as the c-score. Scientists are also classified into 22 broad scientific fields and 174 subfields, allowing their impact to be assessed within the context of their particular research discipline.
Juan Casado’s inclusion in this type of international database adds to a scientific career characterised by strong international visibility.
In 2024, he was recognised as a “Top Author” by Angewandte Chemie International Edition, one of the world’s leading scientific journals in chemistry. The distinction recognised his sustained publication record as a principal researcher in the journal over a ten-year period and placed Casado among the 2% of authors who had achieved this status. He also became the first scientist from Andalusia in the field of Chemistry to receive this recognition.
This distinction adds to his appointment as an “Author Profile” by the same journal in 2017, the Research Excellence Award of the Spanish Royal Society of Chemistry, and his election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry, among other honours received throughout his career.
The scientific activity carried out by CasadoLab and the University of Málaga focuses on understanding the electronic structure and properties of molecules capable of giving rise to new functional materials. Its main research areas include conjugated molecular systems, organic radicals, nanographenes, and materials with potential applications in electronics, photonics, and technologies related to energy emission and transport.
The group’s scientific output is supported by extensive collaboration with national and international institutions and includes recent publications in leading journals such as Nature Chemistry, Journal of the American Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemie International Edition and Advanced Functional Materials.
Juan Casado’s presence in this international classification therefore represents a further recognition of a research career developed at the University of Málaga and reinforces the international visibility of the work in Physical Chemistry and molecular materials being carried out in Málaga.
